The best time to capture your family is exactly as you are today

One day, you’ll look at an old photograph and notice something you had forgotten.

The way your little girl always held your hand with both of hers. The gap-toothed smile your son was so proud of. The way your partner looked at your children when they weren’t paying attention. Those tiny moments often disappear from our memory long before they disappear from our hearts.

As a family photographer, I meet families at every stage of life. New parents who haven’t slept in weeks but can’t stop smiling at their baby. Toddlers who would rather chase butterflies than look at the camera. Teenagers who arrive convinced they don’t want to be photographed, only to end up laughing with their siblings by the end of the session. Grandparents who quietly say, “We haven’t had a proper family photo in years.”

These sessions remind me that photography has never really been about perfect smiles. It’s about preserving life as it is.

The muddy shoes after a walk through the woods. Wind-blown hair on the beach. Tiny hands wrapped around Mum’s neck. Dad pretending to be a horse just to make everyone laugh. The spontaneous hugs, the giggles, the quiet moments in between. These are the photographs that become priceless over time.

Years from now, your children won’t remember what they wore that day. They won’t remember whether the weather was perfect or whether someone had a scraped knee.

They’ll remember how it felt to belong.

One of the things I hear most often after delivering a gallery is, “I didn’t realise how much my children had grown.” Life moves so quickly that we rarely notice the little changes until they’re already gone.

Photographs have a remarkable way of slowing time, if only for a moment.

When I photograph a family, I don’t expect children to sit perfectly still or smile on command. In fact, I hope they don’t. I encourage them to run, play, explore, cuddle, whisper secrets, and simply be themselves. Those natural interactions create photographs filled with personality and genuine emotion.

Every family has a story. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.

One day, these images won’t just decorate your walls. They’ll become part of your family’s history. They’ll be passed to your children and, perhaps one day, to your grandchildren. They will tell a story that words alone never could.

That is why I love family photography.

Not because I’m taking pictures.

Because I’m preserving memories that deserve to be remembered.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a family photoshoot, don’t wait for the “perfect” time. Children grow, seasons change, and life never really slows down.

The best time to capture your family is exactly as you are today, full of love, laughter, and beautifully imperfect moments. I’d be honoured to tell your family’s story through photographs you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
